LOS ANGELES — Former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and her husband, former Navy combat veteran and retired astronaut Mark Kelly, endorsed Kamala Harris today at a campaign event in Los Angeles, praising her leadership fighting for gun safety.
“As a prosecutor and as California’s Attorney General, Kamala Harris has seen the toll of our national gun violence crisis first-hand. She has taken on the gun lobby and she has acted to keep guns out of the hands of felons and domestic abusers. That’s why we know Kamala will be a strong voice in the United States Senate for responsible steps that prevent gun tragedies and save lives,” said Americans for Responsible Solutions PAC Co-Founders Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Captain Mark Kelly. “We need more leaders in the United States Senate like Kamala Harris who will stand up to the Washington gun lobby and stand with the Vocal Majority of Americans who support commonsense change to make our families safer from gun violence. We look forward to having Kamala Harris as a voice for responsibility in the U.S. Senate.”
“I am incredibly honored to have Gabby and Mark’s support. They are American heroes,” said Kamala Harris. “Even in the face of tremendous adversity, they have never wavered in their resolve to stop acts of gun violence and create a safer country. I’m proud to stand with Gabby and Mark in the fight for reasonable gun safety legislation, and in Washington, I’ll fight hard for responsible solutions to stop gun violence.”
In January 2011, Congresswoman Giffords was attacked by a mentally-ill young man at a congressional event in Arizona. The gunman killed six people and shot the Congresswoman in the head at point-blank range. After the horrific incident, Giffords and Kelly founded Americans For Responsible Solutions and have worked tirelessly traveling the country and building coalitions to pass national gun safety legislation.
At the event, Kelly and Giffords praised Harris’ work and career-long fight for gun safety. As Attorney General, Harris has taken more than 19,000 weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition out of the hands of convicted felons and those who are banned by law from possessing firearms. Earlier this year, Harris introduced and won passage of legislation to close loopholes in California’s assault weapons ban, and Harris has successfully fought NRA attempts to weaken California gun safety protections.
