Kamala Harris - For California Attorney General 2010

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson Endorses Kamala Harris for Attorney General

SAN FRANCISCO – Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, the 12-year NBA veteran, successful businessman and education champion currently serving his first term in office, has announced his support for San Francisco District Attorney Kamala D. Harris’ candidacy for California Attorney General.

“The Democratic Party is making great progress. We have great momentum with President Barack Obama,” said Johnson, who first announced his endorsement of Harris at the California State Democratic Convention in Sacramento last weekend. “We’ve got to continue the momentum with a new change of leadership. We need the Democratic Party to embrace ideas, think outside of the box, be relevant for the 21st century, and we need candidates like Kamala Harris.”

“I am thrilled to have Mayor Johnson as part of our team in this campaign,” said Harris.  “As Attorney General, I will work closely with mayors across California to crack down on street gangs, environmental polluters, and the corporate fraudsters responsible for our current financial crisis.”

In May of 2000, Kevin Johnson retired from the NBA after 12 seasons with the Phoenix Suns. He returned to his hometown of Sacramento, California to serve as the CEO of St. HOPE, a non-profit community development corporation he founded in 1989 designed to revitalize inner-city communities through public education, economic development, civic leadership and arts enrichment.

Mayor Kevin Johnson was elected in November 2008 for a four-year term. His focus as Mayor is to keep our streets safe, attract quality jobs to the city, and improve our schools. As Mayor, he is leading efforts to put more police on the streets, promote volunteerism, and raise the profile of Sacramento so that it can live up to its potential to become one of America's great cities.
