San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris running in a crowded 2010 Democratic field for state attorney general, picked up the endorsement today of Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg

"Kamala Harris is an experienced prosecutor," Steinberg said in a statement released by the Harris campaign. "As California's next attorney general, she will fight for all Californians -- from distressed homeowners to children, seniors and families whose neighborhoods need protection from crime."

Los Angeles city attorney Rocky Delgadillo, who lost in the Democratic primary for the job in 2006, is also planning a run for attorney general. Also in the race are two state lawmakers, Assembly Majority Leader Alberto Torrico, D-Newark, and Assemblyman Ted Lieu, D-Torrance.

On the Republican side, a moderate GOP group -- California Republicans Aligned for Tomorrow -- is actively recruiting U.S. Attorney Thomas O'Brien of Los Angeles, who is mulling a run. Chuck Poochigian, a 2006 GOP attorney general candidate, and state Sen. Tom Harman of Huntington Beach, also are considering the race.

Current Attorney General Jerry Brown is expected to mount an encore bid for governor. But he is still keeping his options open for seeking re-election as A.G.
